Insurance Coverage

Your insurance may cover some or all of the cost of a custom wig since it is considered a Cranial Prosthetic under the Durable Medical Goods category.

We recommend consulting with your insurance provider to understand the specifics of your coverage and the potential for reimbursement. Be sure to inquire about the necessary steps and documentation required to file a claim successfully.

A Cranial Prosthetic differs from a traditional wig in terms of quality, performance, and service. These prostheses are designed for individuals experiencing severe hair loss and consist of specialized materials. It is advisable to contact your insurance company to determine your coverage regarding Durable Medical Equipment and the procedure required to file a reimbursement claim for the cost of your Alternative Hair.

We cannot bill your insurance directly. Full payment is required up front. Once you pay and provide your prescription, we will give you an itemized receipt to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

If no providers are In-Network, some insurance companies let you use Out-of-Network Benefits as In-Network benefits. Check with your insurance company if this is possible under your plan.

You will need a prescription for a Cranial Prosthetic from your doctor. Ensure the prescription specifies “Cranial Prosthetic” rather than “wig” for insurance purposes. If denied coverage, you can appeal and include a letter to your insurance company explaining the emotional impact of hair loss on your daily life.

When calling your insurance company, ask:

  • “What coverage do I have for a Cranial Prosthetic?”
  • “Do I need any prior authorizations before purchasing?”
  • “Where do I submit my prescription and itemized receipt?”

Common HCPCS codes for wig prescriptions are:

  • A9282: “Wig, Any Type, Each”
  • D5924: “Cranial Prosthesis”
  • S8095: “Cranial or Scalp Prosthesis”
